Potatoes at $0.99 — The Lowest Price This Week

19 October 2026

White and red potatoes are $0.99 this week at Vallarta Supermarkets — the lowest price among 12 potato items advertised across seven stores. That’s a real savings for families cooking with staples, especially when other options cost nearly double.

This week’s best deal comes in a 4-pound bag, and the offer runs from October 7 to October 13, 2026. At that price, a family cooking potatoes several times a week can stretch their grocery budget further. The next lowest price is $1.99 — but for Signature SELECT® Russet Potatoes at Vons and Albertsons, which are a different type and size, so not a direct comparison.

The low price at Vallarta Supermarkets may be tied to global supply changes. A psyllid insect, Bactericera cockerelli, has been spreading through Peru’s potato-growing regions since late 2021. The pest carries a disease complex known as "punta morada" that can destroy entire harvests. It has already been confirmed in four northwestern Peruvian regions — Cajamarca, La Libertad, Piura, and Tumbes — and is moving south toward key food-production zones.

The International Potato Center (CIP) reports that none of Peru’s more than 4,000 native potato varieties can resist the pest. The infestation, which arrived from Ecuador, has already caused crop damage in fields. The threat has put an estimated $109 million in agricultural value at risk.

Post-harvest losses are another factor affecting supply. In India, where potatoes are a major crop, losses are estimated at 5–12 percent after harvest. These losses stem from quality deterioration, short shelf life, and distress sales. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries commissioned a study that found these losses cost the country about ₹57,000 crore annually in fruits and vegetables alone.

For farmers, the impact is sharp. Studies show that for potatoes, farmers receive only about 37 percent of the final consumer price. The rest goes to logistics, storage, retailing, and processing. The low farmer share reflects weak bargaining power and fragmented supply chains.

This week’s $0.99 price at Vallarta Supermarkets may reflect a combination of global supply pressure and domestic supply adjustments. With the pest spreading and losses increasing, the global potato supply chain remains unstable. That means prices could shift quickly.

But right now, the deal is real. At $0.99 per 4-pound bag, it’s the cheapest potato option among the 12 items tracked across seven stores.

If you’re cooking mashed potatoes, roasted sides, or potato salads, this is a smart time to stock up. The savings add up over a week of meals.

What you can do:

This price isn’t guaranteed to last. With global supply issues, it’s a good idea to plan meals around what’s cheapest this week.
